Sweat to Smile and Reduce Pain - Natural Family Medicine

Written by Stephani Waldron-Trapp, N.D. | May 8, 2016 1:31:24 AM

Exercise is most often associated with improved muscle tone and mass along with cardiovascular health but it also increases the release of endorphins and neurotransmitters which are natural chemicals that our bodies make to help reduce pain and feel happy.  Endorphins are structurally similar to morphine, a pain reducer, and bind to opioid receptors in the brain to minimize discomfort. Serotonin and norepinephrine, neurotransmitters that are released with exercise, help our bodies learn to handle stress better and feel happy.

Here are a couple excerpts from recent studies:

“Participants in randomized clinical trials of physical-activity interventions show better health outcomes, including better general and health-related quality of life, better functional capacity and better mood states.” Penedo, Frank and Jason Dahn. “Exercise and well-being: a review of mental and physical health benefits associated with physical activity.” Current Opinion in Psychiatry 18.2 (2005) 189-193.

Depression affects over 300 million people globally. Imagine going to the doctor and receiving a prescription for exercise instead of antidepressant medication.  A recent study determined that “Exercise and physical activity have beneficial effects on depression symptoms that are comparable to those of antidepressant treatments.” Dinas P.C., Y. Koutedakis and A.D. Flouris. “Effects of exercise and physical activity on depression.” Irish Journal of Medical Science 180.2 (2011) 319-325.
